Sheikh Mohammed seeks status report on Arabic language

18 December 2018

The UAE's Vice-President has sought a status report on the Arabic language and its future. The report would be the basis and an extensive study to approach the challenges of the Arabic language in a scientific way to help develop the methods of use, education and empowerment as a means of communication and knowledge acquisition.
The report is expected to come out in 2019, and many researchers and experts from the UAE and region will work on it.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, directed the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development to launch the report, as the world marked the UN Arabic Language Day on Tuesday.

The Dubai Ruler took to Twitter to say that the UAE celebrates the Arabic Language Day through research and studies, as well as renewed government and cultural policies.
"We have a national agenda for the Arabic language, and we have issued directives to work further through studies and initiatives to cement the Arabic language as a language of life," he tweeted.

During the meeting of the Advisory Council for the Arabic Language, the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development announced the adoption of the directive to issue the 'Status Report and the Future of the Arabic Language'.

The ministry tweeted: "We celebrate today our pride towards our culture and heritage on the #WorldArabicLanguageDay. Our language is our identity and the reflection of our coexistence."

Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, said the report would be "a starting point" to study the challenges faced by the Arabic language. The report is the way to "develop and protect it", she added.

She said the UAE is committed to creating a "knowledge and cultural renaissance". "The report will be used as a reference for using Arabic and its learning methods; the relation between the original language and the common Arabic used by different peoples in Arab nations; and the way the language is used in many other fields such as media and the Internet," she said. "The report will provide opinions of experts and Arabic language professors, and will make recommendations based on the data collected."
